Energy businesses operate in markets where commercial strategy cannot be separated from regulation, infrastructure or capital. A generation project depends as much on its licensing and tariff structure as on the technology it deploys. An upstream investment only makes sense within the fiscal and regulatory framework governing the asset. A renewable developer has to solve simultaneously for financing, demand, land, permits and long-term project economics.
Nigeria’s energy market is being rebuilt on two fronts at once. Electricity regulation has devolved to the states, and the map of who regulates what continues to shift, which means identifying the regulator that holds the pen is now itself a live question rather than a settled one. At the same time, distributed and off-grid power is moving from the margin of the market toward its centre, bringing commercial models that the existing framework was not designed around.
The second front is the transition, and it is a commercial reality rather than a policy debate. Carbon is being priced, traded and adjusted at borders. Climate finance arrives with conditions attached. Sustainability disclosures that were once voluntary now determine which projects attract international capital and which exports face costs on arrival in Europe. For Nigerian energy businesses and the investors behind them, these questions decide whether a project is financeable, not whether it is virtuous.
We work with energy companies, project developers, investors and resource businesses across both. Our role often begins before a project is structured. At DLE, we assess the market, the regulatory pathway, the commercial model and the operating environment and continue through transactions, project development, governance, technology and implementation.
